What is Freecell?

Freecell is a solitaire card game using a standard 52-card deck. Originally developed by Paul Alfille in 1978 and bundled with Microsoft Windows, it has been played by hundreds of millions worldwide.

Unlike most solitaire games, all cards are dealt face-up from the start — meaning pure strategy, not luck, determines the outcome. Over 99% of all possible deals are solvable, and once you start, it's hard to stop.

The Rules of Freecell

The objective is straightforward: move all 52 cards to 4 foundation piles, one per suit, sorted from Ace to King.

• Build the Foundations

  The 4 piles in the upper right are foundations. Build each suit (♠♥♦♣) from Ace up to King. Complete all 4 foundations to win.

• Move Cards Between Columns

  Cards in the 8 columns can be moved if they are placed in descending order and alternating colors (red ↔ black). Only the bottom card of each column is available to move.

• Use the Free Cells

  The 4 cells in the upper left are your free cells — temporary storage for one card each. This is the game's core mechanic. The more free cells you keep open, the more cards you can move at once.

• Auto-Move Feature

  Cards that can immediately go to the foundation can be moved all at once with the auto-move button. Use it to speed up the endgame.

• Empty Columns are Power

  Clearing a column entirely creates powerful empty space. Empty columns dramatically increase your mobility — treat them as your most valuable resource.
